Recognizing Your REAL Enemy…

enemyThe Lord has shown me over time that there is a spirit of PERVERSION that comes to DISTORT, PERVERT, and TWIST. It manifests in many forms but in all cases the intent is to GRIEVE, cause PAIN and to VEX God and His people. The word PERVERT is most commonly thought to only refer to sexual perversion. But the word actually refers to anything that twisted from its original intention. Sex was a good thing created by God to be a blessing between a man and a woman in the context of marriage, but satan has PERVERTED it to be used outside of marriage, between same sexes, within family relationships and even with animals. The original intention of sex was PERVERTED. This same spirit seeks to PERVERT anything with good intentions to become something bad:

  • to change so much as to create a wrong impression or alter the meaning of
  • to put to a bad or improper use
  • to cause to turn away from what is right, proper, or good; corrupt
  • to bring to a bad or worse condition; debase
  • to put to a wrong or improper use; misuse
  • to interpret incorrectly; misconstrue or distort
  • change the meaning of or be vague about in order to mislead or deceive
  • to lead into mental error or false judgment
  • misapply

We must be aware of this EVIL SPIRIT so we learn how to pray, interceded and practice spiritual warfare, lest we begin to lose our love for humanity and our need for forgiveness and redemption. We must hate the sin, and love the sinner. We must pray against the spirit, not against the person. We must wage war in the heavenlies for our battle is not against flesh and blood. We must guard ourselves spiritually from those who unwittingly give place to these spirits to operate, but our hearts must be right before God regarding others. We cannot harbor unforgiveness, bitterness or resentment, but must choose to walk in love and forgiveness toward everyone. We must see the bigger picture. While it may affect us personally at a very personal level, we must recognize we are just pawns in a much greater scheme to tear down the Church at large and destroy our witness and credibility.

This perverted spirit commonly manifests itself in the form of MISUNDERSTANDING among each other in the Body of Christ. Misunderstanding is defined as:

  • a failure to understand properly
  • mistake as to meaning or intent
  • putting the wrong interpretation on
  • an understanding of something that is not correct
  • false impression
  • to take (words, statements, etc.) in a wrong sense; understand wrongly
  • to fail to understand or interpret rightly the words or behavior of

This spirit takes the words or intentions of someone and “twists” them as they are sent from the sender to the recipient. Therefore what is received is “twisted” or “perverted” from what was intended to be sent. Often this can cause strife and division, or improper judgment of others and their actions/motives. When misunderstanding comes between two people, it is often not recognized by the receiver because they are convinced they properly discerned what they saw/heard, not realizing that the original motive or intention had been influenced by this spirit and twisted when they received it.

This spirit also causes many to MISUNDERSTAND God’s intention in the Word of God and therefore TWIST the meaning of Scripture. This causes much division in the Body of Christ. Many who are afflicted by this perverted spirit will justify many things that are bad by twisting the meaning of the Word.

Here are some examples in the Word of God of “twisting” of things by this perverted spirit:

Psalm 56:5

KJV – Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

NIV – All day long they twist my words; they are always plotting to harm me.

NASU – All day long they distort my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil.

The Hebrew word used here for WREST, TWIST or DISTORT is OT:6087 – bx^u* ‎`atsab (aw-tsab’) and it means: to wrest, to carve, to vex

  • WREST: to twist or turn from the proper course, application, use, meaning, or the like; wrench.
  • CARVE: To cut with care or precision into a desired shape to achieve or gain (something)
  • VEX: To agitate, stir up, toss about

2 Peter 3:16

NIV – His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

NKJV – … as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

KJV – As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

The Hebrew word used here for DISTORT, TWIST and WREST is NT:4761 ‎ ‎strebloo (streb-lo’-o) and it means: to wrench, to pervert: to twist, i.e. turn quite around or reverse convert, turn, i.e. revolution; turning.

Micah 3:9

NIV – Hear this, you leaders of the house of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right;

NASU – Now hear this, heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and twist everything that is straight.

NKJV – Now hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert all equity…

These all use the Hebrew word OT:6140 vq^u* ‎`aqash (aw-kash’) which means: to twist, to distort, to pervert, to make crooked

We must always be aware of the enemy’s schemes and remember to PRAY for those who persecute us – knowing they are influenced by evil. We must even pray for those who have hurt us or been influenced by evil against us.

2 Cor 2:9-11

For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices. NKJV

Eph 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. NIV

And we too must stay prayed up so that we ourselves do not fall prey to the enemy’s schemes and become deceived by this spirit, therefore casting false judgment on others or becoming bitter and demanding vengeance. We are not above being deceived. We must stay humble and continually place our own hearts/motives before the Lord.

There is no condemnation if we do get caught up in the enemy’s schemes. We can just repent and humble ourselves before the Lord as King David did in Psalm 139. In verses 1-18 he recites is trust in God at all times… he rehearses God’s attributes of faithfulness, sovereignty and omnipresence. Then in verses 19-22 he seems to have a momentary relapse into his “flesh” and asks God to slay his enemies and never forgive them (this is David’s “Jonah” moment). He even begins to almost try to convince God of why he is justified in his motives! But then he rebounds back into the Spirit and humbles himself in verse 23-24, recognizing the ugliness in his own heart and asking God to heal the offensive ways in him. This too can be our response when we have become bitter, unforgiving or vengeful.

Psalm 139 (NIV)

O Lord, you have searched me and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.

You hem me in — behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,”

12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

(His moment of frustration and venting with a wrong heart…)

19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!

20 They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.

21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord, and abhor those who rise up against you?

22 I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.

(His return to humility…)

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

It’s a daily battle to keep our hearts right with God and with others. My prayer is that this post will help you see you are not alone in your struggle and persecution. THIS IS THE LIFE OF A CHRISTIAN. We must stay close to God and keep our hearts in His hands.

God is a faithful God and is waiting to lead us into the way everlasting if we will just ask!

Blessings ~

PS)  The Lord also reminded me that during these seasons we should pray to break WORD CURSES spoken against us. It would take another blog post to teach on the power of words, but negative things spoken by others over us can affect us or curse us. So when you find yourself in the midst of misunderstanding/false accusation, etc with others, it is good to pray:

“In the name of Jesus, I break all word curses spoken against me and command every assignment of the enemy set against me to be broken in Jesus name.”

Those who are unwittingly used by this perverted spirit against us, can also unwittingly speak things about us they believe to be truth. So we are wise to break this off of ourselves while we forgive and pray for them.
